How Police barred journalists from covering Kebbi PDP guber primary

From Shuaibu Zubair Tatu, Birnin Kebbi

The Policemen and officers drafted to the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary election on Wednesday  night in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State barred journalists from covering the event when the delegates votes were being counted by party officials.

The DCP who led the police team to venue of the primary election at the Event Centre in Birnin Kebbi, resisted the intervention of the DSS personnel as he bluntly ignored their plea to allow journalists from the various print and electronic media cover the event.

Trouble with the DCP started when journalists attempted to enter the venue where the delegates votes were being counted as he ordered policemen stationed at the gate of the venue not to allow journalists from entering. “Stop them, do not allow any journalist into this place”, he ordered.

Even as secretary of the state council of NUJ , Alhaji Ahmed Idris and chairman of the state correspondents chapel, Alhaji El- Yakub Usman Dabai pleaded and explained to the DCP that journalists were at the venue to  perform their duties, he stood his ground that no journalist would be allowed into the venue.

When  informed of the development, secretary of the PDP in the state, Malam Kabiru Kalgo came out of the venue to plead with the DCP but he still maintained his stance that journalists would not be allowed into the venue to cover the votes counting segment of the governorship primary election.
