Int’l Widows’ day: Helpline selects  370 women for training

Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Abuja has selected three hundred and seventy indigenous widows in the  Federal Capital Territory  and  environs for training in skills acquisition. 

The skills which include weaving of traditional attires (Aso-oke), bag making, soup making, potatoes flour making and snacks making, among others, would help them to be self reliant and economically stable.

In a statement issued by the founder and president of the NGO, Dr Jumai Ahmadu said the exercise is scheduled for 21st-23rd June, at Diplomats Parks and Gardens, Area1, Gariki, Abuja.

It said the programme is designed to commemorate this year’s International Widows Day with the theme: “Sustainable Solutions for Widows Financial Independence”. 

The statement explained  that the widows would be proficiently trained on the above skills for financial independence and economically stability in line with the goal of United Nations.

Recall that every June 23rd, the Foundation, in commemoration of International Widows’ Day fetes widows and organizes hands-on skill acquisition trainings for widows and orphans in and around the FCT. 

“These programmes  are meant  to enable them overcome typical problems in developing countries, including poverty, violence, social stigmatization, health and cultural challenges. 

“In the course of the programme also, there will be situational reports on effectiveness of previous poverty alleviation programmes undertaken the Foundation. These will include testimonies from the beneficiaries of the past trainings”
