..Set To Dump NNPP
From Maduabuchi Nmeribeh, Kano
Former Governor of Kano state and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Monday, accused the National Leader and Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of betraying him, declaring his intention to resign from the party very soon.
Shekarau had gone into political marriage with Kwankwaso, his erstwhile political enemy, following his inability to clinch the consensus candidature of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Kano Central Senatorial ticket.
Though there were several overtures by Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, persuading Shekarau to remain in APC, the former Governor had hoped for a better political future in NNPP, going by juicy promises made to by Kwwbkwaso.
But things seems to have fallen apart between the two political heavyweights, following Shekarau’s utterances on Monday, which indicated that he is no longer interested to retaining his membership in the NNPP.
However, even before Shekarau’s Monday utterances, accusing Kwwbkwaso of outright betrayal, indications were rife that the former Governor was on his way out of NNPP as he was said to have been into a series of meetings with the presidential candidates of Labour Party (LP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC.
Though he has not officially made clear the next party to decamp to, sources close to Shekarau said he may be on his way to joining the PDP.
Addressing a mammoth crowd of his supporters at the Kano Foundation office along BUK Road, Shekarau regretted that Kwwbkwaso did not only betray him, but was in a mission to humiliate him.
Recounting his encounter with Kwwbkwaso’s in the NNPP, Shekarau described himself as “man alone” as he was given forms to contest his Senatorial seat, while his supporters were abandoned to their own fate.
According to him, on the 5th of May 2022 long before joined NNPP, “I personally met him at his country home and discussed extensively my decisions to follow him to his new party and he expressed deep happiness”.
“And still on 11-5-2022 I still met Kwankwaso because since our last meeting we were not able to meet, and I reminded him of a proposal I submitted to him during our last meeting.
“The proposal was the list of my supporters who were seeking different political offices, and when I talked to Kwankwaso about it he said he was aware of it and definitely something would be done.
“Similarly, on 16-5-2022, Kwankwaso came to my house at about 9pm and we still discussed extensively the same issues he even called five people including Abba Kabir, Kawu Sumaila, Alhassan Rirum and two others and presented them to me as those to make the lists of contestants.
“During the meeting which led to my decamping, Kwankwaso came with my Senatorial Form alone and sneaked it to me telling me that I was the first to receive it and I asked him the ones for my supporters he said it would be done.
“Since then Kwankwaso kept deceiving me and only for him, to much later say we are late for my supporters to be on the lists, and there was nothing he could do.”
Though he did not declare the next party he was going to join, Shekarau, however, did not hide his decision to dump NNPP.
