From Maduabuchi Nmeribeh, Kano
Following outcry from the masses, Kano State Government and Islamic clerics have appealed to the Federal Government to extend the January 30 deadline for the termination of old Naira notes.
Islamic Clerics from the Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya and Izala sects in the State jointly advised the Federal Government to extend the deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the redesigning of Naira notes due to unavailability of the new notes for the people.
The appeal was made in a resolution of a meeting which also has in attendance Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his Deputy and All Progressive Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Dr.Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, his running-mate, Hon.Murtala Sule Garo, APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas.
The meeting was held at Kano Government House on Thursday.
They resolved that economic activities have been paralysed in Kano, the commercial nerve centre of Northern Nigeria, due to hardship caused by the shortage of the new Naira notes.
The meeting, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to, out of his magnanimity, consider the suffering caused to people of the State due to the shortage of the new Naira notes and extend the deadline set by the CBN.
