FG, EU organize workshop for Design of MRV System for Energy Sector

To ensure effective Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) System for Energy Sector, the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMENv) through the Department of Climate Change has organized a stakeholder engagement Workshop.

It was organized under the Task 1 of the European Union-Nigerian Climate Change Response Programme (EU-NCCRP).

In her welcome remarks, Director, Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe said that
Nigeria’s NDC demonstrates the country’s determination to contribute to global emission reduction and grow its economy at a lower carbon trajectory while ensuring Sustainable Development.

“To support the Federal Government of Nigeria’s efforts towards the fulfilment of its conditional NDC target, the European Union (EU) through the provision of technical assistance for the implementation of the Nigerian Climate Change Response Program (NCCRP) is supporting the country with the objective (among others) to establish the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) framework and implement sustainable sectoral MRV systems at National Level, Waste and Energy sectors respectively.

“The NCCRP Task 1 envelop the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)of mitigation actions. The main activities to be developed under this task are the following Development of the legal architecture for the institutional MRV; Set up the MRV for the energy and the waste sectors; Capacity development of data management and reporting procedures (e.g. training, capacity building, workshops).

“In accordance with the NCCRP methodology, The technical assistance for the implementation of this Project is being provided by the Conseil Santé Consortium (French consulting company)in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change (DCC), Federal Ministry of Environment, as the main beneficiary.

She commended the European Union for the support given to the Nigeria Government towards the achievement of the objectives.

The workshop was attended by representatives of MDAs and the staff of the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment.
