By George Mgbeleke

Senate on Thursday at plenary confirmed the  appointment of the nomination of new Service Chiefs by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Upon arrival in the red chamber, the Service Chiefs were given two minutes each to introduce themselves before the screening exercise went into closed session because of security reason.

The Senate had earlier suspended relevant rules to allow the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters ( Senate) , Senator  Abdullah Gumel  to bring Service  into the Chamber.

The Service Chiefs who were confirmed by the  Senate in closed  session

are: Maj. Gen. Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. T. A. Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admirral Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff and AVM H.B. Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu had on Tuesday this week, asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of the new Service Chiefs.

He made the request in a letter dated July 5, 2023, and addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, which he read on the floor of the red Chamber at plenary.

The Service Chiefs individually took time off to   brief the upper legislative chamber on the strategies they have in stock to tackle insecurity across the country.

Meanwhile some Senators, especially Senator Garba Musa Maidoki (PDP Kebbi South) had vowed  that the screening exercise of the Service Chiefs would be thorough and non of them will be given the privilege of a mere bow and go.

Meanwhile, prior to the confirmation of the four service chiefs, the Whip of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume has cautioned his colleagues on the danger of rushing to exchange pleasantary with nominees after their screening exercise.

He advised those wishing to greet or exchange pleasantary with nominees to do that outside the Senate chamber to avoid unnecessary distractions and lowing the sacred nature of the Parliament.

Consequently, the upper chamber eventually confirmed the appointment of the Service Chiefs.
