USAID State2State Trains Sokoto State House Of Assembly Members On Legislative Oversight

The USAID State Accountability, Transparency, and Effectiveness (“State2State”) Activity conducted the Sokoto State Legislative Oversight Orientation Workshop in Kano, Kano State.

According to a statement signed by Communications Specialist, USAID State2State, Mr Israel Odiba, the workshop which was held from September 4 – 5, 2023, had in attendance 31 of the elected members of the 10th Bauchi State House of Assembly whereby the legislators were introduced to the workings of the legislative body, including its structure, rules of procedure, and the role of different committees.

“The Legislators were educated on the importance of legislative oversight and its role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.

“The participants (38 male and 0 female) with the standard legislative processes, including law-making, budget, planning, and audit oversight functions, rules of proceedings, the importance of inclusive civic engagement, and the roles of the legislators in addressing reform and sustainability gaps in Sokoto State,” the statement read.

Odiba added that the workshop reinforced the importance of government transparency and accountability, and will support a more informed and effective legislative body.

“At the end of the workshop, the SHoA committed to improved adherence to the budget calendar and instituted a monthly bulletin of its activities for updates on all government social media platforms.

“SHoA will also create a desk office on citizen engagement within the SHoA to increase efforts towards citizen engagement in legislative processes,” the statement added.
