Abbas mulls one per cent of national budget for the Auditor General’s Office

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has advocated ehanced budgetary allocation to the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation to audit over 900 Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the country.

Abbas who was represented his deputy Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu at the unveiling of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House, also said the move is to ensure effective delivery of service and address loopholes noticeable in the MDAs.

He however reiterated that the committee on public account should ensure that agencies are held accountable and responsible when necessary.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Account reiterated that as it’s core values, transparency, independence and fairness will be applied and assured that it’s goal to ensure a complete cycle of PAC activities are achieved.

Earlier, the Accountant General of the Federation Mrs. Oluwatoyin Shakirat Madein, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy Olawale Edun represented by Director Economic Research, Mrs. Ogbonna Gem respectively noted that as partners in progress, there’s need to ensure the committe on PAC hit the ground running in carrying out it’s oversight functions.

The Deputy Majority leader  Hon. Abdulahi Ibrahim, said the intention of the 10th House of Representatives in constituting the Public Account Committee is to ensure that corruption is nipped in the bud.

Also the Deputy Minority leader Hon. Aliyu Madaki while commending the Calibre of members in the public Account Committee, however said it is necessary to note that the committee is a creation of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria that have the responsibility to not only legislate but also carry out oversight functions and as lawmakers.
