Anambra businesses groan under another sanitation levy

From Ifeoma Ejiofor

A number of shop owners are presently not happy with the Anambra State government for asking them to pay another sanitation levy after they have paid earlier.

In Nnewi, a number of agents and officials sent out to collect the new sanitation levies did not find it easy with shop owners who called the governor and his administration all manner of unprintable names.

A shop owner, Mrs Nkiruka Muoneme said that she paid her sanitation levy and other government levies in January and that the payment was to cover the whole year.

She said that she paid on time to avoid any problem with the authorities but expressed shock that she was asked to pay another levy that will cover November and December.

“I am shocked that they are now coming up with another demand notice asking me to pay again the levy I have paid since January. This is wickedness of the highest order

“The annoying aspect of the whole thing is that the agents who are going around told us that the job of collecting Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) levies has been awarded to another contractor and so we have to pay again,” she said.

Another business premises owner who will not want his name in print accused the Anambra State government of being exploitative.

He described the development as very unfortunate even as he urged the Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo to rein in his revenue contractors.

Attempts to get the government’s side of the story did not yield any positive dividend as the Anambra State Commisioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu could not be reached on phone.
