We are against gender-based violence, says Imo women

At the weekend, Imo Women from diverse backgrounds undertook a march round the city with placards condemning acts of violence against women.

Among the gender friendly organizations that joined the Office of the first Lady, Imo State, Bar. Chioma Uzodimma, in a ceremony organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups (WAVG), for a solidarity march in the City of Owerri to End–Gender-Based Violence, marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence are  NAWOJ, NAPTIP and FIDA,

They were led by the Commissioner for WAVG, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, who represented the wife of the Governor, and piloted the march that also took them to Imo State House of Assembly to present the demands of the women. 

At the State Assembly, the women took turns to express concerns over the plight of rhe women and commended the Imo Parliament for passing the VAPP Bill.

They demanded for further conclusive actions, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of such violence.

Responding, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Chike Olemgbe, represented by Hon. Henry Agbasonu, acknowledged the impactful activism by Imo Women. 

Olemgbe pledged to continue moving motions to enforce Laws protecting women and Children, acknowledging the achievements already made in this regard.

Meanwhile, concluding the March at the Ministry of WAVG in Owerri, the Special Adviser on Special Duties at the Office of the Wife of the Governor, Mr. Humphrey Ikeaka, expressed gratitude for the resilience shown by the Participants.
