By Stellamaries Amuwa

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), has
commended the federal government for appointing more women into leadership positions. While congratulating the new CEO of Zenith Bank, Mrs. Adora Umeoji and the new Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, it prayed God to give them the wisdom and strength to carry out the new tasks ahead.

This was made known during the NAWOJ Congress held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Utako, Abuja.

The meeting which was presided over by the Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, deliberated on a couple of issues.

The Association frowned at the alleged use of women as collateral for bandits in the northern part of the country and called for proactive measures by stakeholders in addressing the menace.

Meanwhile, it commended the federal government for the release of the kidnapped Kaduna school children and also urged the federal government to stem the tide of Kidnappings in schools, stressing that it has contributed to the number of out-of-school children in the country.

NAWOJ therefore, called for urgent steps by the government at all levels to beef up security in vulnerable areas to protect the citizens from attacks.

The Association expressed concern that insecurity in the country had resulted in the hike of goods and services and called on the federal government to take proactive measures to tackle the menace.

Congress in session observed with dismay that the economic situation in the country was getting worse as Nigerians were struggling to make ends meet citing the recent incident at Nasarawa State University, Keffi where some students died trying to get palliatives to survive the hardship.
