One of the fastest growing universities in Nigeria, Cosmopolitan University, Abuja, has recognised the outstanding achievements of secondary school students in its first-ever artificial intelligence (AI) competition.
The event, held in Abuja, tested participants on creativity, evaluation, and referencing skills.
At the award presentation ceremony on Thursday, Professor Carl Adams, Vice-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, emphasised the institution’s commitment to integrating AI into education.
He highlighted the university’s ongoing collaborations with both local and international institutions to advance AI use in various sectors.
“AI is the future of education, healthcare, business, and numerous other fields,” said Professor Adams. “Our university is leading efforts to embed AI in various activities, and this competition is a significant part of that mission. We foresee many such initiatives in the future.”
Dr. Ibrahim Mani, the university’s Registrar, stressed the importance of promoting AI among secondary school students. He outlined the university’s vision to expand the competition, eventually making it a national and international event.
“AI will shape the future across all human endeavors,” Dr. Mani stated. “Our goal is to ensure that students are not left behind in this technological evolution. This competition is designed to introduce them to AI, preparing them for a future where AI will be integral to everyday life.”
Dr. Juliet Okpo, coordinator of the Create with AI competition, explained that the event aims to instill responsible AI practices in students. She noted that the university’s curriculum includes AI to prepare students for life after school.
“This competition showcases how AI can and should be used,” Dr. Okpo said. “It is part of our initiative to promote responsible AI usage through our Centre for Collaborative Artificial Intelligence.”
Winners of the competition included students from Roberto Secondary School, Bristol Academy, and Starville Secondary School. Khalid Alao from Roberto Secondary School won gold in both the creativity and referencing categories.
Ifeoluwa Bankole-Ladipo of Starville School won gold in the evaluation category.
Others winnersare Okoye Chineme from Bristol Academy, who won silver in creativity; Semilore Adesipe of Starville, who clinched bronze; Godreigns Amedari of Starville School, who secure silver in the evaluation category; and Onwuneme Jessica of Bristol Academy, who went home with bronze.
In the referencing category, Emmanuella Asuni, Ibe Ihuoma, and Ipeh Christopher of Starville School won silver, while Chime Angelica of Britarch School clinched bronze.
