The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle on Monday disclosed that Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) will soon sign an MoU for the manufacture of small arms.

The Minister disclosed this at a press conference to herald activities marking the 60th anniversary of DICON.

He said the MoU will boost economic activities in the country.

The Minister said DICON is already attracting patronage from some African countries.

He announced that the theme of the anniversary is “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology.”

Matawalle said the theme reflects DICON’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s defense capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements.

He emphasized the significance of the recently enacted DICON Act 2023, which he said has the potential to greatly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and security.

“The new DICON Act will enhance foreign exchange earnings through the local production of defense equipment, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce capital flight to foreign nations,” he stated.

“DICON’s 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to the defense needs of our nation,” Matawalle remarked.

The Minister outlined DICON’s journey, noting its evolution from a modest start in the production of small arms and ammunition to its current capabilities, which include the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment.

“Despite facing challenges, DICON has persevered, driven by its commitment to self-reliance and national security,” he said.
