Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers have endorsed Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following Umar Illya Damagun’s suspension. This development has sparked jubilation among PDP faithfuls, supporters, and stakeholders eager to see the party transform and overcome recent setbacks.
Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary, confirmed Yayari’s appointment aligns with the PDP’s constitution. As the highest-ranking officer from the North, Yayari assumes the position pending the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on October 24, 2024.
Yayari, the current national treasurer, will hold the fort until the NEC meeting. The meeting aims to produce a substantive chairman from the North Central Zone, ending the leadership tussle plaguing the party.
Ugochinyere, a lawmaker, welcomed Damagun’s suspension, calling it a “welcome development” paving the way for the party’s transformation. Damagun’s tenure was marred by controversy and allegations of anti-party activities with Nyesom Wike.
The PDP Governors Forum urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to conduct credible congresses in states where party officers’ tenures expired. Governors reaffirmed their commitment to resolving issues and uniting stakeholders in Rivers State.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State emphasized the NEC will resolve the chairmanship issue. Party leadership called on members to remain focused and united during this critical period.
As the PDP prepares for its NEC meeting, stakeholders are optimistic the party will emerge stronger and more united. The meeting aims to chart a new course, addressing lingering issues threatening stability.
The suspension of Damagun and Yayari’s emergence mark a significant turning point for the PDP. With governors and stakeholders working together, there’s hope the PDP will regain footing as a formidable opposition force.
Ugochinyere stated, “With Damagun’s removal, PDP’s transformation will begin.” All eyes are on the NEC meeting and Nigeria’s opposition politics future.
The PDP’s renewed unity and focus will be crucial in the 2027 elections. With Yayari at the helm, the party seeks to rejuvenate and reclaim its position as a strong opposition force in Nigerian politics.
