Armed robber killed while robbing church goers

A suspected armed robber met his Waterloo on Sunday morning as he was gunned down while allegedly robbing early Sunday morning church goers.

The incident happened at Ifite in Awka South LGA of the state.

The armed robber who was said to be in company of two others was said to have successfully dispossessed some victims who are mostly young school girls of their handbags and other valuables.

The suspected bandits were said to be on the prowl when a team of vigilante operatives swooped on them, gunned down one while two beat a fast retreat.

A source who will not want to disclose his identity said that six hundred Naira, cubes of Maggi and old Nokia torch were found in the bag snatched by the dead bandit.

A victim (Names withheld) recounted her experience, “I was coming back from work, and one other girl who was going to church just came out of their lodge gate, and the three men approached me and started asking what I had in my bag.

“The girl who was going to church saw them and flung her bag into the bush. They searched my bag and saw the phone and money and they took the bag.

“Then the other girl started running back into her lodge. After collecting my bag, I was told to run without looking back. While I ran towards the bush, one of the robbers pursued me, the other two chased after the other girl.

“While this was going on, local security men emerged and shot at the robber, killing him, while the other two fled,” she said.

The corpse of the shot suspected robber was lying in a pool of his own blood while passersby who were on their way to church were seen quickly running away from the scene.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga (SP) could not be reached for his comments.
