Lawmakers, lawyers collaborate to promote rights of women, children

Members of the Kano State Caucus in the House of Representatives has emphasized the importance of collaboration with lawyers in the lawmaking process. According to Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, leader of the Kano and Northern Caucus in the House, despite their experience in making laws, there is still a need for professional advice and inputs from lawyers to fill the gap and make their work easier.

Doguwa made this statement during a meeting with members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Kano State Chapter at the House of Representatives, Abuja. He noted that lawyers can contribute to their performance through public hearings, constituency offices, and other windows of opportunity.

The Chairperson of FIDA, Kano State Chapter, Bar. Bilkisu Suleman, informed the lawmakers that FIDA is an international body of professional lawyers and legal professionals who offer free legal services to less privileged individuals, as well as support services and advocacy. She emphasized that FIDA allocates time to dedicate services for the promotion of the rights of women and children.

Suleman highlighted that FIDA provides free legal services, advocacy visits, and follows up on cases to promote and preserve the rights of women and children. She also mentioned that FIDA has branches and members all over, and they handle cases in both metropolitan and rural areas.

Doguwa emphasized that the collaboration between lawmakers and lawyers is crucial, especially during the constitutional review process. He encouraged FIDA members to contribute their insights and expertise to help fill the gaps in legislation.

The leader of the Kano and Northern Caucus in the House also acknowledged that laws are not set in stone and can be reviewed and amended. He expressed his willingness to work with FIDA members to make contributions to the laws of the Federation.

FIDA, Kano State Chapter, has been actively involved in promoting the rights of women and children. They have organized training programs, advocacy walks, and visits to correctional facilities to promote access to justice.
