Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has extended his heartfelt sympathies to the victims of a recent boat accident that tragically claimed the lives of several passengers, many of whom were residents of Kogi State.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, Governor Ododo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that most of the victims were women, petty traders, and artisans engaged in legitimate economic activities to support their families and contribute to the state’s economy.
The governor expressed concerns that the waterway connecting Kogi and Niger states has become increasingly hazardous due to frequent boat accidents.
He called on relevant authorities to enforce safety measures to reduce the risks associated with water transportation.
Governor Ododo praised the efforts of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in conducting search and rescue operations following the mishap. He also stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration to enhance emergency response mechanisms and prevent future tragedies on the waterways.
Commiserating with the families of those who lost their lives, the governor assured that the state government would provide support to those injured to aid their recovery.
According to NIWA, the accident occurred on the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger when a boat carrying traders from Kogi State to the Katcha weekly market in Niger State capsized. Several passengers were killed, while others sustained injuries.
