The House of Representatives has pledged to support the Nigerian Army in tackling insecurity challenges across the country. This commitment was made by Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Aminu Balele (APC-Katsina state), during the 2025 budget defence on Monday.
Rep. Balele expressed satisfaction with the army’s 2024 budget performance, stating that the committee is committed to providing unwavering support to the military. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and solidarity between the legislative and military bodies.
The committee’s primary objective is to ensure the welfare of troops, provide adequate power provisions, and promote capacity building. Rep. Balele assured that the committee is steadfast in its determination to achieve these goals.
During the closed-door session with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the committee analyzed and scrutinized the 2024 budgets. They also discussed the current security situation in the country and the way forward.
Rep. Balele acknowledged the pressure from Nigerians to address the insecurity challenges quickly. He noted that the committee has done its best to address these concerns, despite challenges like inflation and exchange rate fluctuations.
The committee was impressed with the army’s implementation of the 2024 budget, achieving over 99% implementation. Rep. Balele attributed this success to the committee’s oversight functions, which involved sending colleagues to various parts of the country.
The House of Representatives’ support for the Nigerian Army is crucial in tackling insecurity challenges. As Rep. Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, emphasized, the military needs to redouble its efforts and re-strategize to eliminate undesirable elements terrorizing Nigerians.
Ultimately, the collaboration between the legislative and military bodies is essential in addressing the country’s security concerns. With the House of Representatives’ commitment to providing adequate budgetary provisions, the Nigerian Army can better equip itself to tackle insecurity challenges.
