A constitutional lawyer of note, Amobi Nzelu Eaq, Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers, has accused Senator Adams Oshomhole of Igbophobia, based on his comment against honour for late Prof Humphrey Nwosu.
He also expressed disappointment over the way Nigeria Senate strictly followed Oshomhole’s stand and denied honour to Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission.
Addressing journalists in his office over the weekend, Nzelu believes that individuals who claim to know history should be cautious not to distort facts or remain silent when they should speak out.
Nzelu specifically criticized Senator Adams Oshomhole’s comments, which he sees as an expression of hatred towards the Igbo people. He argues that honouring Nwosu, whether in life or death, won’t alter the historical significance of the 1993 election. Nzelu suggests Oshomhole’s views are misguided and fails to consider the context of the incident under a military government not intending to hand over power at the time.
According to the constitutional lawyer, Late Prof. Nwosu was the hero of the election, but his employers or paymasters weren’t willing to hand over power, leading to the election’s annulment. He emphasizes that Nwosu conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, a fact acknowledged by former Head of State Babangida in a 2002 interview.
