The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy should be measured by its inclusiveness. He made this statement while addressing a group of social media influencers at the National Assembly on April 28, 2025. The event, themed “Smart Cities and Ethical Media: Navigating the Role of Policy in National Development,” aimed to reflect on the intersection of governance, innovation, and responsible communication.
Speaker Abbas highlighted the importance of involving critical stakeholders, particularly the youth, in the democratic process. He noted that Nigeria’s digital landscape has expanded rapidly, with approximately 38.7 million active social media users as of 2025. The Speaker emphasized that meaningful partnership with the digital community is essential to building a more participatory democracy.
The Speaker pointed out that the House of Representatives has expanded channels of engagement, including live-streamed plenary sessions, constituency dialogues, and the annual Open National Assembly Week. He also cited legislation such as the Nigeria Start-Up Act and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, which foster an enabling environment for technology entrepreneurs and safeguard digital rights.
Speaker Abbas emphasized the House’s commitment to innovation and youth empowerment. He mentioned initiatives like the Legislative Mentorship Initiative, Bi-Annual Youth Town Hall Meetings, and enhanced budgetary support for youth development programs. The establishment of the House Committee on Youth and the House Committee on Youth in Parliament underscores the House’s resolve to institutionalize youth participation.
The Speaker urged social media influencers to balance freedom of speech with national interest. He noted that the tension between these two concepts has subsisted for centuries, with many philosophers seeking to find a balance. Dr. Joe Abah, a former Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, suggested that it is possible to guard against fake news and hate speech without enacting additional legislation.
The event brought together prominent figures, including Kayode Okikiolu of Channels Television, O’tega Ogra, Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications, and Olusegun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media. The discussion highlighted the significance of collaboration between the government and the digital community in promoting national development.
The Speaker’s emphasis on inclusiveness and partnership with the digital community reflects the House’s commitment to building a more participatory democracy. By engaging with social media influencers, the House aims to foster a more informed and engaged citizenry, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s development and growth.
