The House of Representatives has called on the President to deploy additional security personnel to Jos, Plateau State, to prevent further attacks and restore peace in the area. Specifically, the House urged the deployment of security personnel to Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas and other vulnerable communities.
This resolution was passed after the adoption of a motion titled “A Matter of Urgent Public Importance on the Urgent Need to Address the Incessant Attacks and Killings in Plateau State.” The motion was moved by Hon. Ishaya to Lali and Hon. Daniel Asama Ago, who highlighted the gravity of the situation in the state.
The House noted that the recent attacks in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas have resulted in the loss of numerous lives, displacement of thousands of residents, destruction of property, and severe disruption of economic and agricultural activities. Members expressed worry that the frequency and brutality of these attacks indicate serious security challenges that require urgent and comprehensive solutions.
The House also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) to provide comprehensive relief materials and medical supplies to the affected communities. Additionally, the House called for the establishment of well-equipped camps for displaced persons.
The House mandated the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Defense, and Police Affairs to investigate the root causes of these persistent attacks and submit a report within four weeks, recommending sustainable solutions. This committee is expected to provide recommendations that will help prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of lives and property in the affected areas.
Hon. Ishaya Lali, leading the debate on the motion, also urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development to develop and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the affected communities. This plan should include the rebuilding of destroyed homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.
In addition to these measures, the House mandated the House Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure the implementation of these resolutions and provide monthly progress reports to the House. Members who contributed to the bill also called for similar gestures to be extended to other states facing similar challenges.
The House observed a minute of silence in honor of the lives lost to the attacks, demonstrating its solidarity with the affected communities and its commitment to finding solutions to the security challenges in Plateau State. By taking these steps, the House aims to address the humanitarian crisis and security challenges in the state and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
