Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, has justified the defection of all federal lawmakers from Kebbi State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a move towards a government of national unity.
The lawmakers, including Senators Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki, formally announced their defection to the APC at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly Complex, Abuja. The announcement was witnessed by APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Nasir Idris; and APC National Organizing Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Argungu, among others.
Bamidele defended the defection, stating that it was based on the overriding public interest and not a move towards creating a one-party state. He emphasized that the APC is running a government of national unity, with members from various parties joining the ruling party.
“What we now are running is a government of national unity. No one is being coerced. If anyone is coerced, definitely the person is not Senator Adamu Aliero. They all recognise that this is not the time for grandstanding. This is the time for all of us to work together to take Nigeria to the next level,” he stated clearly.
The defection of the Kebbi lawmakers to the APC has significant implications for the country’s political landscape. With this move, the APC has further consolidated its position as the ruling party, while the opposition PDP has lost key members.
The Senate Leader’s justification of the defection highlights the APC’s commitment to inclusivity and national unity. As the country moves forward, the APC’s government of national unity is expected to drive progress and development, with lawmakers from various backgrounds working together to achieve common goals.
