A civil society group, Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has expressed strong disapproval of planned protests reportedly being organized by faceless groups, describing them as baseless and harmful to Nigeria’s current trajectory under President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released Tuesday, the organization warned that such actions could jeopardize national progress in economic development, security and welfare reforms, urging Nigerians to shun such moves.
Speaking through its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, DWI criticized the motives behind the proposed demonstrations and questioned their timing, noting the gains being recorded in key sectors of the country.
“In light of the recent announcements regarding protests being planned by certain faceless groups, the Democracy Watch Initiative feels compelled to voice our strong opposition to these actions, which we deem unfounded, unreasonable, and ultimately counterproductive,” Bamidele stated.
“These planned protests come at a time when our nation is witnessing a remarkable trajectory of progress under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His administration has made significant strides in addressing the multifaceted challenges that have historically plagued our country.”
He pointed to reforms in the economy and infrastructure as signs of progress, suggesting that the current administration is laying a solid foundation for national advancement.
“From economic reforms aimed at revitalizing our markets to infrastructural developments that promise to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, the current administration is diligently working towards a brighter future for Nigeria,” he added.
Bamidele further alleged that those pushing for protests are motivated not by public interest but by personal or political ambition.
“It is disheartening to observe that amidst this backdrop of hope and progress, certain unscrupulous political opportunists are attempting to exploit the discontent of a few for their own gain.
“These groups, often shrouded in anonymity, have failed to articulate any constructive grievances and instead resort to sowing seeds of discord and division. Their motivations are not rooted in the genuine aspirations of the populace but rather in a desperate bid to regain power and influence that they have long lost.”
Calling for a united front, DWI appealed to leaders, civil society, and citizens alike to resist divisive tactics and instead support nation-building efforts.
“They distract from the important work being done to build a more prosperous and equitable society. Instead of rallying behind initiatives that could lead to meaningful change, these protests threaten to derail progress and foster an environment of instability.
“Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that the problems facing our nation are complex and multifaceted. They cannot be solved through protests that lack a clear agenda or constructive solutions. The challenges we face require collaboration, dialogue, and a commitment to working together as a united front. The actions of these faceless groups, therefore, are not just misguided; they are detrimental to the very fabric of our democracy.”
Bamidele urged Nigerians not to fall for divisive rhetoric but to focus on the collective national vision.
“As citizens of this great nation, we must remain vigilant against the machinations of those who seek to exploit our frustrations for their own selfish ends. We must resist the temptation to be swayed by their rhetoric and instead focus on the progress we are making together.
“The Democracy Watch Initiative calls upon all Nigerians to reject these unfounded protests and to stand in solidarity with the efforts of the Tinubu administration as it strives to create a better future for all.
“We urge all stakeholders, political leaders, civil society organizations, and everyday citizens, to prioritize constructive dialogue and collaboration over divisive actions. Let us work together to build a Nigeria that reflects our collective aspirations for peace, prosperity, and progress. The future is bright, and together, we can achieve greatness,” he said.
