The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has flagged off the construction and expansion of water supply project to satellite towns.
At the commencement of the 198km of different pipes in Bwari township (lot 1) on Wednesday, he said the initiative is planned to provide potable water in the suburbs of Abuja.
Recall that while commissioning the greater Abuja Water Supply Project on June 16, Wike had disclosed that FCT Administration signed a fresh agreement during President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 visit to China.
The exercise will also continue with the flag-off of water projects in Karu town and its environs in Abuja Municipal Area Council (Lot 2).
He said the water project which will cover the Six Area Councils by 2027 is an indication that the current FCT Administration is not only concentrating development in the city centres but across the entire city.
According to him, president Bola Tinubu has approved the payment of 50% of the contract sum, expected to be inaugurated by the president in his third year anniversary.
Wike said, ” We appealed to the traditional rulers, youths, women, and our community members, to take this project as their very own project. This is the first time a government has said, you too deserve to have potable water, because water is life. Not just saying it, but implementing it.
“Now, what this tells us also is that we are not concentrating development only in the city area. We are also carrying development to the area councils. By the time we finish in Bwari and Karu, in the next year’s budget, by the grace of God, we will be able to go to Kuje and Kwali. And then by 2027, by the grace of God, we’ll have taken over Gwagwalada and Abaji”.
