The pomp and pageantry that emanated during the inauguration of Engr Nwankwo Christian led new caretaker committee of Attakwu Akegbe autonomous community Town Union, at Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and and Chieftaincy Affairs, on August 6,2025 .is an indication of the people’s wish to have a credible and development oriented town union leadership in the community.

It was gathered that the merriment on that particular day also flowed down like a cultural festival across the nooks and crannies of the community.

The celebration stemmed from the fact that the village heaved a sigh of relief that the new caretaker committee led by Engr. Nwankwo Christian and Barr. Agu Joseph Madueke as President General and Secretary respectively, will stir a new direction that would lead to a constitutionally elected, generally accepted and development or dented Town Union Executive for Attakwu Akegbe autonomous community.

The joy of the inauguration of the caretaker committee leadership among the people also stemmed from the fact that it was a triumph against the machination of a few members of the community who kicked against the appointment of a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the community before proper election will be conducted.

The group also went to court to stop the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, from appointing a Caretaker Committee to oversee the affairs of Attakwu comnunity.

But the suit with No…HAGB/30/2025, brought before an Enugu high Court, sitting at Agbani division,Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, presided over by Justice J.L.C Okibe, directed the state Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon.Deacon Okey Ogbodo, to appoint an interim Executive for Atakwu Akegbe Town Union,at the expiration of the tenure of Chief Stephen Eneh led executive of the Town Union on Wednesday,July 23,2025, pending final decision of the court on the suit before it brought about by some concerned citizens of the community.

In compliance to the above court order, the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon.Deacon Okey Ogbodo, fulfilled all the procedures by giving out certificate of recognition’ to a 9 – member appointed Caretaker committee of Attakwu Akegbe Community led by Engr.Nwankwo Christian and Barr Agu Madueke on August 6,2025.

Prior to the Court order, the past President General, Chief Stephen Eneh, was accused of allegedly sponsoring protests of rented crowd to the state house of Assembly and other government quarters, with the protesters accusing Hon Dr Okey Ogbodo of collecting bribe from their traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Greg.Ugwu to abort the election of who would succeed him.

It was reliable gathered from sources at Attakwu Community who don’t want to be quoted in print that the Community had know generally accepted Constitution that will guide a proper election of a new Town Union based upon which the Concerned Citizens of the Community advocated for a Caretaker Committee that would in the interim write a constitution that would be approved at a general meeting of the community, before a new election of the Town Executive will be conducted.

The sources alleged that Chief Eneh’s eight years and three months alleged ursurpation of the Town Union leadership failed to produce and table a widely accepted Constitution before Attakwu General Assembly meetings.

The terms of reference given to Engr.Nwankwo Christian led Caretaker committee of Attakwu Akegbe Town Union by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftancy Affairs were to prepare a Constitution that will be read at a general meeting of Attakwu Community and must be a acceptable by the majority, restore peace among warring factions in the community, run a transparent administration and give a progressive report of their activities to the ministry after every quarter (4 months).

They were also mandated to conduct an election for a new Town Union Executive of Attakwu Community, before the end of their Six months tenure.

In a chat with newsmen, the Grand Patron of Enugu traditional Rulers Council, HRH Igwe Greg.Ugwu, who is also the traditional ruler of Attakwu Akegbe autonomous community, appraised that ‘a Daniel has eventually come to judgement’.

His words, “To me, it is a victory for the entire Attakwu Akegbe Ancient Kingdom .The tenure of the past executive has expired. We expect them to follow the established procedures to ensure the emergence of democratically elected town union executives. The laws are gazetted, and remain sacrosanct. The caretaker committee was inaugurated because nature’s abhors a vacuum”.

HRH IGWE Greg Ugwu sued for peace, stating he has forgiven all those who castigated him in one form or another in the cause. He urged all to cooperate with the Caretaker committee in the arduous task of recovering lost grounds, so the community can move forward.

He said, “I have forgiven everyone that said uncomplimentary things about me. I am the father of the community by the fact that I’m the traditional ruler. What I want is togetherness, development and peace. Some might have toed a particular line due to misinformation, emotions and other influences. I urge them to close ranks to develop our community. Gov Peter Mbah’s administration is an epitome of community development. We can’t benefit from such if we are at war. The truth is clear, and the past is gone. We can’t mediate the past, but we learn from it to reshape the future for better”.
