The Global Alliance for Peace and Unity (GAPU) has honored Dr. Oliver Tersoo Agundu, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kogi State, with the Icon of Peace and Excellence award. This recognition celebrates his outstanding leadership and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Dr. Agundu’s leadership style has promoted inclusiveness, fairness, and peace, especially during the last electoral cycle in Plateau State. GAPU’s President, Hon. Solomon Pevkyaa, noted that Dr. Agundu’s stewardship has brought credibility to the electoral process and renewed confidence in INEC.
Pevkyaa stated, “Dr. Agundu has shown that leadership is not about position but about service. His leadership has been exemplary, and we found it deserving to recognize him as a model of peace and excellence.”
Dr. Agundu described the award as “humbling and encouraging,” saying it would spur him to do more in the service of the nation. He dedicated the recognition to lovers of electoral transparency and the entire INEC family.
The REC stressed that credible elections remain the cornerstone of peace and stability in Nigeria. He urged young Nigerians to embrace peace and shun violence, especially during elections. “Democracy thrives when the people see elections as a peaceful contest of ideas, not a battlefield,” he said.
Dr. Agundu commended GAPU for recognizing his efforts, saying such gestures encourage public servants to remain committed to integrity and accountability. Stakeholders praised him for his courageous and impartial stance, urging other electoral officers to emulate his example.
GAPU aims to promote conflict resolution, civic education, and social harmony. The award is part of its initiative to celebrate individuals who embody values of peace, integrity, and national service.
The event ended with a call on political actors to support INEC in delivering credible elections and building a culture of peace across communities in Nigeria. With leaders like Dr. Agundu, Nigeria’s democracy can thrive, and its citizens can look forward to a brighter future.
