Nigeria’s challenges demand collective action – Senior lawyer, Nzelu

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyeka

Renowned constitutional lawyer, Amobi Nzelu, has called on Nigerians to come together to address the country’s pressing challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship.

In an exclusive interview, Nzelu emphasized that the government must address the root causes of these issues, rather than just treating the symptoms. “The protests are a symptom of deeper issues,” he said. “The government must address the root causes of hardship and insecurity. It’s not just about the economy; it’s about governance and accountability.”

Nzelu also stressed that insecurity is fueled by corruption, poverty, and lack of opportunities, and that a holistic approach is needed to tackle these challenges. “The government has a responsibility to protect citizens,” he said. “However, we must also acknowledge the complexities of the issue.”

On the role of the international community, Nzelu said that while external help can be beneficial, ultimately, it’s up to Nigerians to drive change. “The US and other international partners can support Nigeria’s development efforts, but ultimately, it’s up to Nigerians to drive change,” he said.

Nzelu also addressed concerns about sovereignty, saying that while it’s important, Nigerians must also recognize that they’re part of a global community. “Sovereignty is important, but we must also recognize that we’re part of a global community,” he said. “If external help can improve our situation, we should consider it.”

Looking ahead, Nzelu expressed hope that Nigerians can come together to address their challenges. “I hope Nigerians can come together to address our challenges,” he said. “We need leaders who prioritize the nation’s interests and are committed to accountability, transparency, and good governance.”

Some potential follow-up questions however are: What specific steps can the government take to address insecurity and economic hardship? How can Nigerians hold their leaders accountable for governance and transparency, and what role can civil society organizations play in promoting national development?
