Innovative research remains a vital engine for industrial advancement and national progress, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, has said, as six undergraduate teams unveiled practical solutions to community-based challenges during the institution’s 8th Undergraduate Research Day.
Speaking on Wednesday at the event held at the campus, Fawehinmi underscored the role of research in tackling societal issues and supporting Nigeria’s broader development goals.
He praised the students for their ingenuity and dedication, describing their efforts as proof that young academics can play a significant role in national transformation.
“The future of our country lies in the ability of our universities to produce not just graduates, but problem-solvers equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive innovation,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s resolve to strengthen research-led education and sustain an environment that empowers students to excel both academically and professionally.
The featured undergraduate teams showcased projects across major sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, public health and environmental sustainability, concentrating on workable responses to pressing local and national concerns.
Several of the studies examined new strategies for boosting food production, creating alternative energy options and tackling public health issues affecting communities.
According to the organisers, the Undergraduate Research Day initiative aims to foster analytical thinking, creativity and cross-disciplinary collaboration among students.
They noted that the programme also provides an avenue to highlight the institution’s expanding research profile and its impact on national development.
The event drew academics, industry players and students, many of whom applauded the depth and practical relevance of the research on display.
