The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, said it has carefully reviewed a petition submitted by the former Secretary of the Council, Chief Rex Peters Okechukwu, concerning the alleged killing of his son, Master Noel Chinedu Okechukwu.
The deceased was reportedly shot dead by private security guards at the Estate of Senator Stella Oduah in Akiri-Ozizor, Ogbaru Local Government Area.
In a Communiqué signed by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu (PhD) Chairman and Comrade Olechukwu Onuegbu(PhD) noted that the council has reviewed the petitions written by the father of murdered student to relevant authorities.
The murdered 27-year-old student of the Department of Theatre Arts at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University was allegedly shot by private security guards at the Estate on August 17, 2024, while attempting to buy fresh fish from a nearby local pond.
NUJ through this communiqué, appealed to the Nigeria Police Force to, as a matter of urgency, expedite action toward ensuring justice for the family of the deceased.
The Council is also appealed to the Police to listen to the family’s prayers to withdraw the case file from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for reassignment.
The withdrawal according to the Communiqué is aimed at conducting the necessary autopsy and completing all required procedures for the arraignment of the suspects before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Council however condemned the alleged denial of the family’s access to the corpse of their late son.
NUJ also called on the police to promptly inform the family of the whereabouts of the body and grant them access to it. This step is essential in calming the family and assuring them that the matter is being handled with the seriousness it deserves.
