The Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Danlami Chiya, of Kwali Area Council and some of his colleagues have expressed support for the recent political realignments in the FCT, describing the development as a step toward unity and progress for residents.
Speaking in Abuja, the chairman said he was “overwhelmed” by what he termed the coming together of key political actors, including former senator Philip Taminu Aduda, into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing journalists after a meeting with Aduda on Tuesday, he noted that the move was driven not by partisan interests but by a shared commitment to improving the welfare of people in the FCT, adding that remaining in the opposition would not yield meaningful benefits for the territory.
The ALGON chairman also threw his weight behind calls for Aduda to return to the National Assembly, describing him as an asset with a track record of attracting appointments and opportunities to the FCT. He said stakeholders and residents were ready to rally support for the former lawmaker.
Chiya was accompanied to the meeting by the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Abdullahi Sabo; and Chairman of Bwari Area Council, John Shekwogaza Gabaya.
Sabo said Aduda coming to APC was driven by calls from the people, not personal ambition, as supporters had been urging the former lawmaker to contest again in order to continue contributing to the growth of the FCT, describing him as a valuable leader with more to offer.
He added that the renewed collaboration among political leaders, including the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, would broaden political participation and improve governance in the territory.
Expressing optimism ahead of the 2027 elections, he said ongoing development efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would yield better outcomes than in 2023 and position the FCT for greater federal opportunities.
In his remarks, Gabaya said lessons from past political experiences had informed their decision to return to the ruling party. Using a local proverb, he stressed that the people of the FCT would not repeat past mistakes, noting that all serving area council chairmen were now united in their resolve to reposition the territory for progress.
He added that the decision to align with the APC was driven by confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
According to him, Wike’s approach to governance has brought the government closer to the people more than ever before, assuring that the renewed alignment would further consolidate development efforts across the FCT.
