By Abbanobi-Eku Onyeka

The Senate on Tuesday suspended plenary following its resumption from the Easter holiday to honour the late Hon. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, a serving member of the House of Representatives who passed away on April 4, 2026.

The motion for suspension was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central), who noted that the National Assembly received news of Hassan’s death with profound shock. Until his passing, the late lawmaker represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State.

Before his election to the House of Representatives, Hassan served with distinction as Director of Drafting in the Directorate of Legal Services of the National Assembly, where he rendered invaluable legal and legislative services. The Senate noted that he was a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to legislative development and democratic governance in Nigeria.

Lawmakers observed that his death has created a profound vacuum in the National Assembly and deprived his constituents and the nation of an experienced and committed legislator. They described him as a lawmaker who served with honour, diligence, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.

The Senate further observed that his passing is a great loss not only to the House of Representatives but to the entire National Assembly, his home state of Kano, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It added that it was fitting for the upper chamber to stand in solidarity with the House in mourning the irreparable loss.

Accordingly, the Senate resolved to observe a minute’s silence in his honour and to suspend plenary as a mark of respect for his service to the National Assembly and the nation.
