By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has constituted a General Court Martial to prosecute 36 serving military personnel accused of mutiny and actions allegedly aimed at subverting constituted authority.

The development, announced on Friday, signals a decisive move by the military high command to strengthen discipline and tackle threats to national security within its ranks. The DHQ said the action is a follow-up to its statement of January 26, 2026, which first brought the allegations to public attention.

The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, stated that the inauguration of the court martial reflects the Armed Forces’ resolve to uphold discipline, accountability, and national integrity. He emphasized that proceedings would be conducted with full adherence to due process, fairness, and impartiality, ensuring justice is dispensed without bias.

He added that all cases would be handled in line with the provisions of the military justice system, with the rights of the accused protected and the principles of fair hearing strictly observed.

The DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, the rule of law, and maintaining the integrity of the Armed Forces, stressing that acts of indiscipline would be addressed firmly and in accordance with established legal frameworks.
