2027: Adekoya drops Senatorial ambition, picks Reps form following constituency pressure

By Mike Uzendu, Abuja

Former Deputy Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Abdel-Majid Adesegun Adekoya, has abandoned his senatorial ambition to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adekoya who pick his nomination form number the Tanimu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said his decision followed sustained appeals and consultations with party leaders, traditional rulers, women groups, youth associations and other stakeholders across the constituency.

The former lawmaker, who represented the constituency in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2023, in a statement on Sunday, said he opted to return to the lower chamber to continue constituency-focused projects and deliver more direct representation.

According to a statement, Adekoya’s move was influenced by what supporters described as an overwhelming demand for his return to the House of Representatives due to his previous record in office.

During his tenure, he sponsored several bills and facilitated infrastructure projects, including roads, schools, bridges and empowerment programmes targeted at youths, traders, women and elderly residents.

The statement also highlighted ongoing and completed constituency projects linked to his period in office, including the Vintage Orimolusi Palace in Ijebu-Igbo, Ago-Iwoye City Stadium, Imusin-Ajina Shopping Centre, an annex of the International Infertility and Maternity Hospital linked to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, and the Senator Prince Buruji Kashamu Skill Acquisition Centre in Atikori, Ijebu-Igbo.

Other projects listed include the Oni Ultra Modern Jetty in Ogun Waterside, Oke-Agbo Multipurpose Centre in Ijebu-Igbo and the Demiji Farmers Camp in Ibiade, Ogun Waterside.

Speaking on his decision, Adekoya said returning to the House of Representatives would provide him with greater opportunities to directly address the needs of constituents.

“I have listened to my people. I have heard their call. I chose to drop the senatorial ambition because the House of Representatives is where I can serve you directly and deliver the most immediate results for Ijebu North, Ijebu East, and Ogun Waterside,” he said.

“We started something together, and it is time to finish it and do more.”

His entry into the race is expected to reshape political calculations within his constituency as parties intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
