Anambra police warn motorists against concealed number plates

From Isaac Ojo

The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated its call on vehicle owners and users to register their vehicles and avoid concealing number plates.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, Tochukwu Ikenga, gave the directive in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Ikenga said the directive followed earlier orders from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, amid rising cases of unregistered vehicles and deliberate concealment of number plates, which he said hinder identification and weaken crime prevention and public safety efforts.

“The command wishes to inform Ndi Anambra and the public, particularly vehicle owners and users, that it has commenced enforcement of the directives of the Inspector-General of Police against the use of unregistered vehicles, concealment, defacement, alteration and/or obstruction of vehicle registration number plates,” Ikenga said.

He advised vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and that registration number plates are properly displayed and visible at all times.

According to him, any act of covering, bending, defacing, removing, altering, or using unauthorised plate numbers constitutes a violation of the law and would attract appropriate sanctions.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, noted that the enforcement exercise is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing intelligence gathering, and facilitating the prompt identification of vehicles used in criminal activities.

He called on motorists to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by complying with all vehicle registration requirements and avoiding actions capable of concealing the identity of their vehicles.

The police spokesman added that officers deployed for the enforcement exercise had been directed to carry out their duties professionally, courteously, and in accordance with the law.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in Anambra State.
