The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reinforced its commitment to digital security and data protection with a two-day Cybersecurity Awareness Programme aimed at strengthening cyber resilience and safeguarding critical national data.
Themed “Cyber-Aware Nigeria Immigration Service,” the programme was organised by the Service’s ICT and Cybersecurity Directorate. It held on June 16 and 17, 2026, at the NIS Headquarters Auditorium, Shehu Shagari Complex, Sauka, Abuja.
The initiative was designed to enhance officers’ understanding of cyber risks, improve data security practices, and strengthen capacity to protect the Service’s digital infrastructure and sensitive national information from emerging threats.
Declaring the programme open, Comptroller-General of Immigration Kemi Nandap, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General, Planning, Research and Statistics Directorate, DCG D.M. Bagari, stressed that cybersecurity must remain a collective responsibility as the Service expands its digital operations.
DCG Bagari noted that the NIS, as custodian of critical national data, remains a high-value target for cybercriminals and other hostile actors. She directed the ICT and Cybersecurity Directorate to extend similar awareness programmes to formations nationwide to strengthen institutional resilience.
Speaking at the opening, Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of ICT and Cybersecurity, DCG A. Obianime, commended the CG for her commitment to reform, digital transformation, and capacity development. She said the programme was intended to deepen cybersecurity awareness across all levels of the Service.
The training featured expert presentations on building a cyber-aware immigration service, understanding the NIS threat landscape, cybercrime foundations, intelligence gathering in the digital era, and practical strategies for cyber threat prevention, investigation, and international collaboration.
The programme forms part of the Service’s broader efforts to promote a strong cybersecurity culture and ensure the protection of Nigeria’s critical digital assets in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
