The Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Mr Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has appealed to parents and guardians to caution their children against taking shelter under trees during storms and heavy rainfall.
Mr. Sani-Omolori Aliyu said that the appeal has become very necessary as two minors lost their lives, while two others sutained injuries following a windstorm incident that occurred in Bashe village, Burra, Ningi LGA, of the state.
A statement from the police command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said that the CP commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the incident.
According to the statement, a report was received at the Burra divisional police headquarters that there was a downpour accompanied by a violent windstorm in Bashe village, around 1600 hours of 29th June 2029.
Five children, between the ages of 8 and 12 years, all of Bashe village, ran and took refuge under a tree to shield themselves from the rain, but the storm uprooted the tree and it fell on them.
Policemen were immediately mobilized to the scene and rushed the victims to the primary health care centre, Bashe, for medical attention.
Two of the victims were certified dead by a medical practitioner, one escaped unhurt, while two others are currently admitted and responding to treatment.
“The scene was photographed and the corpses have been released to their relatives for burial according to Islamic rites. Investigation Into the incident is on going,” the statement concluded.
