The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned a series of welfare and infrastructure projects at the Headquarters 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, underscoring the Army’s commitment to improving the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness of its personnel.
The projects commissioned include newly constructed accommodation blocks for soldiers, the Python Soldiers’ Club and a dedicated Regimental Sergeant Major’s (RSM’s) House.
The initiatives form part of the Nigerian Army’s broader efforts to enhance living and working conditions for troops under the COAS’ Soldier First philosophy.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the projects were described as strategic investments aimed at strengthening personnel welfare, boosting morale and enhancing the operational readiness of troops across the country.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremonies, Lieutenant General Shaibu stated that providing decent, secure and conducive accommodation for personnel and their families remains a critical priority for the Nigerian Army. He noted that improved living conditions directly contribute to higher morale, better administrative efficiency and enhanced combat effectiveness.
The Army Chief explained that a well-motivated and adequately cared-for soldier is better positioned to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and respond effectively to emerging security challenges. According to him, sustained investment in welfare remains a key component of building a professional and resilient force.
He expressed appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, , for his continued support to the Nigerian Army through the provision of resources that have strengthened personnel welfare and enhanced operational capabilities.
At the commissioning of the Python Soldiers’ Club, the COAS emphasized the importance of fostering a healthy social environment for troops, noting that welfare extends beyond accommodation and operational equipment. He said recreational facilities play a significant role in improving mental well-being, resilience and camaraderie among personnel.
Lieutenant General Shaibu explained that the club would provide soldiers with a conducive space to relax and interact after demanding operational engagements, thereby strengthening unit cohesion and overall mission effectiveness.
The Army Chief also commissioned the newly constructed RSM’s House and used the occasion to reaffirm the critical role played by Regimental Sergeant Majors in maintaining discipline, leadership and professionalism within the ranks.
He described RSMs as the backbone of regimental administration and custodians of standards, morale and discipline, stressing that providing quality accommodation for them is both a welfare measure and a strategic investment in leadership at the unit level.
According to him, RSMs serve as a vital bridge between officers and soldiers, helping to translate command directives into action while fostering trust, esprit de corps and operational cohesion.
Their contributions, he said, remain indispensable to mission success across all theatres of operation.
The commissioning of the three projects reflects the Nigerian Army’s determination to place personnel welfare at the centre of its transformation agenda. Military authorities believe the investments will further strengthen operational readiness and support the development of a professional, motivated and combat-ready force capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
