The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage with the launch of a project to establish a cultural and historical centre in honour of King Jaja of Opobo. The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Bar. Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja.
Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, the member representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State, expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government for taking concrete steps to immortalize King Jaja of Opobo. He noted that the project will enhance exposure to and immortalize the great leader through deeper research, letting the world know the heritage of the people.
The Minister emphasized that the project signifies a milestone in the collective resolve to take Nigeria’s Art and Culture to enviable heights. She noted that the establishment of the center is in tune with Nigeria’s vision of utilizing the Art, Culture, and Tourism Sectors to create job opportunities for the youth and contribute to the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
The paramount ruler of Opobo, His Royal Majesty, King (Dr.) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V, also appreciated the federal government for taking steps to immortalize King Jaja of Opobo. He noted that this is the first time the federal government is doing something concrete in King Jaja’s name.
The project is expected to lead to the immortalization of the great leader, create jobs, and boost tourism in Rivers State and the South-South region. The Technical Committee has been charged with playing critical roles in the realization of the project, including serving as a liaison between the Federal Government, the State Government, and the Host Community.
