By Mercy Aikoye

Hon. Aliyu Muktar Betara, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has donated N100 million to support victims of the Maiduguri flood.

The donation was made during an on-the-spot assessment of the flood disaster in Maiduguri, where Betara expressed grief over the death and displacement of thousands of residents.

Betara, who represents Biu/Bayo/Shani and Kwaya Kusar Federal Constituency of Borno State, commended Governor Babagana Zulum’s prompt intervention to cushion the effects of the flood disaster.

He applauded the governor’s efforts in supporting the affected people across the state and pledged his support in alleviating the suffering of the citizens.

Betara expressed solidarity with the victims and commiserated with Governor Zulum, the state government, and the families of the victims.

He acknowledged the devastating impact of the flood on the lives and livelihoods of the people of Maiduguri.

Betara’s donation is aimed at providing relief and support to those affected by the flood.

He also assured that necessary intervention will be provided through relevant institutions to ensure the rehabilitation of the victims.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that at least 37 deaths have been recorded during the Maiduguri flood disaster, which started last week Friday.

NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, indicated that 29 states and 172 LGAs have been impacted by flooding, affecting over 1 million people, displacing 625,239, and resulting in 259 deaths.

Betara assured that he would bring the flood disaster to the floor as a matter of Urgent Public Importance when the House resumes from its annual recess in the coming weeks.

He called for a coordinated response to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the flood.

The flood disaster has highlighted the need for urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Betara’s donation and commitment to supporting the victims demonstrate his dedication to serving his constituents and the people of Nigeria.
