2023 Gov Election: NNPP asks court to cancel result, but INEC objects

From Celestine Ihejirika, Jalingo

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Taraba State Chapter, has prayed the Taraba State Election Petition Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State, to cancel the March, 2023 Governorship election result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in favour of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Counsel to the NNPP, Bar. Ibrahim Isiaku (SAN), stated this Monday while answering questions from Journalists shortly after hearing at the court.

According to Isiaku, there were non-accreditation of voters during the election in some polling units, just as there were more votes than the number of people accredited with results altered, which he emphasized reduced the scores of NNPP and increased those of other political parties, insisting such were null and void.

Isiaku maintained that the results declared by INEC was characterized by malpractices and over-voting.

“INEC had already mentioned in its reports that collation was marred with violence caused as a result of gunshots between the Police and Nigeria Army”, he said.

He added that INEC was subjected to tension which forced them to declare results in favour of PDP.

In a shift reaction, Counsel to the INEC, Bar. Emeka Okoro (SAN) called on the Tribunal to dismiss the petition of NNPP saying it lacks evidence.

our correspondent who was at the tribunal reports that the case was adjourned till further notice adding that a new date will be communicated to both parties.
