Abbas Tajudeen @59: A life of service, humility, and leadership

Today, October 1, marks a double celebration for Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, It’s Nigeria’s Independence Day and his birthday. Born on October 1, 1965, no one could have predicted he’d become a national figure, the Number 4 Citizen, nearly six decades later.

Hon. Abbas Tajudeen’s journey to prominence began as a primary school teacher from 1981 to 1988. He then pursued higher education, earning a Diploma in Accounting, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration, and a Ph.D. in Business Management.

Before joining politics, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen worked as a clerical officer, investment officer, accountant, and lecturer. He was the founding Head of the Accounting Department at Kaduna State University (KASU) and became the youngest lecturer at Kaduna State Polytechnic.

In 2011, he entered politics, representing Zaria Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He’s been re-elected four times, sponsoring 74 bills, with 21 signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Despite his achievements, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen remains humble and private. He shies away from attention, preferring others to recognize his efforts. Working with him has revealed his compassion, generosity, and straightforward nature.

As a leader, he values truth and transparency. During an interaction with the Legislative Mentorship Initiative, he emphasized these principles, stating, “I always prefer people should say who you are, rather than you telling people who you are.”

Those close to him attest to his kindness, humility, and jovial nature. Chief of Staff Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi noted, “You cannot sit in a room with Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for five minutes and not like him.”

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s commitment to Nigerians’ welfare is evident in his actions. He has requested that funds for congratulatory birthday adverts be channeled to charity, demonstrating responsible leadership.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu praised the Speaker’s demeanor, intelligence, humility, and selflessness. He highlighted the Speaker’s respect for his deputy’s opinions and his strong, principled leadership.

As Speaker Abbas Tajudeen marks his 59th birthday, we wish him many more fruitful years and sound health in service to humanity. His legacy as a dedicated public servant and compassionate leader continues to inspire those around him.
