From Everest Ezihe, Owerri
Football fans, get ready for a showdown like no other! This Saturday, November 16th, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Imo State chapter has advanced plans to take on Diamond Dynamics FC, Owerri in a match that’s set to bring out laughter, skills, and maybe a few on-field stumbles.
The game is part of the organization’s 2024 Week celebrations which has been detailed to kick off by 7 am at the ICAP playground, Egbu Owerri where pens will be traded for boots, and microphones swapped for moves.
This isn’t just any rivalry – these sports journalists are swapping the safety of the press box to face the heat of the field, and they’re ready to prove they’ve got more than just sharp words!
Leading the pack for Imo SWAN is Anthony Ahize of the Statesman Newspaper. This isn’t his first rodeo; Ahize has a reputation as a top-tier attacker with deadly speed and shooting precision. The defense better be on high alert – this guy will zig-zag around them before they can say, “offside!”
Adding to the arsenal is Dayo Arowolo from Darling FM, a recent “signing” from Zanders FM. This skilled winger will be storming the flanks, ready to whip in those crosses with the same finesse he brings to his on-air banter.
But SWAN’s defense is no joke either. Samson Orji from Trumpeta Newspaper promises to hold the line with a steeliness that would make any editor proud. The journalists’ backline will be anchored by Orji, a defender known for his no-nonsense style (and maybe a few extra kicks here and there).
On the frontlines, expect Cosmos Chukwuemeka of Darling FM to bring an energy level that’s as wild as his radio commentary. This fearless forward’s quick feet and relentless drive make him a tough matchup – he’s as relentless on the field as he is in his post-game interviews!
It’s equally star-studded team with the likes of Everest Ezihe of The Authority Newspaper is expected to bring his own flair and tactics into play, while Hyacinth from Otowngist is sure to win in the aerial duels with his lanky frame (and hopefully keep his footing).
Tunde Liadi of Sporting Life Newspaper and Benny Naza of Omalicha FM round out the squad, promising plenty of laughs, thrills, and maybe a few accidental assists to the other team.
Calling the action from the sidelines will be sports commentators John Nwaogu and Chris Abiaziem, who’ll capture every toe-stub, slip-up, and surprising show of skill. And keep your eyes peeled for appearances by other sports media talents, including the ever-enthusiastic Kingsley Uzowulu.
This novelty match isn’t just about the game; it’s about laughs, camaraderie, and proving who can actually walk the talk on the pitch. So, fans, arrive early, grab a good spot, and get ready to cheer (or laugh) as these journalist-athletes take the field for an afternoon of unforgettable football fun!
