Reps calls for urgent action on cholera outbreak in Badagry

By Mercy Aikoye

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to halt the deadly cholera outbreak in Badagry West, Lagos State. This resolution was passed after the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Sesi Whingan, who sought the House’s intervention in addressing the crisis.

In honour of those who lost their lives during the cholera outbreak, the lawmakers observed a minute’s silence. The House expressed grave concern over the suspected cholera outbreak in the Zongo community, Seme area, Badagry West LCDA, Lagos State, which has claimed lives and threatens a public health catastrophe.

The lawmakers noted that residents, especially women and children, are facing severe cholera symptoms due to contaminated water, poor sanitation, and a collapsed healthcare system. The situation has been worsened by the relocation of the Nigerian Air Force Mother and Child Care Hospital. A four-year power outage has crippled water systems, vaccine storage, and health facilities, directly fueling the spread of cholera.

The House is alarmed that without urgent action by the Federal and Lagos State Governments, the outbreak could spread nationwide, endangering countless lives. The lawmakers believe that this neglect violates Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates the welfare of the people.

The House commended the local health workers and volunteers who risked their lives to combat the crisis, pleased by their prompt response. The lawmakers called on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development to coordinate urgent relief, including clean water and sanitation facilities.

The House also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide sanitary materials, water purification tablets, and disinfectants to affected communities. Furthermore, the lawmakers mandated the Federal Ministry of Power and the Rural Electricity Agency (REA) to restore electricity to Badagry West LCDA urgently to support water systems and health facilities.

To ensure compliance and assess the situation, the House mandated the joint Committees on Healthcare Services, Power, Rural Electrification, and Emergency Preparedness to visit Badagry West LCDA. The committees are expected to report back within three weeks with recommendations for further action.

The House’s resolution highlights the need for urgent action to address the cholera outbreak and prevent further spread. By providing relief, restoring electricity, and ensuring access to clean water and sanitation facilities, the government can help alleviate the suffering of affected communities and prevent a larger public health crisis.
