Nigerians take center stage in constitutional review

By Mercy Aikoye, Abuja

The constitutional review process in Nigeria has taken a significant step forward with the North-West Zonal Public Hearing in Sokoto. Hon. Sada Soli, Chairman of the House of Representatives Sub-Committee on Constitutional Review, emphasized that the process belongs to the people and would reflect their hopes and aspirations.

“This is not just a gathering, it is a national conversation,” Hon. Soli said. “You are not just observers. You are stakeholders and co-authors of Nigeria’s next constitutional chapter.” The hearing provided a platform for Nigerians to contribute to the review process.

The Committee is reviewing 87 priority amendment bills across key areas, including judicial reform, electoral transparency, state policing, gender inclusion, fiscal accountability, and local government autonomy. Hon. Soli urged attendees to be bold and shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

“Let us build a Nigeria where justice, equity, and progress are not just ideals, but everyday realities,” Hon. Soli said. He emphasized the importance of public vigilance as the bills move to the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

The assemblies of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, in collaboration with civil society organizations and local government Chairmen, presented their recommendations to the committee. They emphasized the urgent need for the creation of additional states to enable more effective policing and tackle insecurity.

The North-West states argued that the vast landmass of the region makes governance and security enforcement difficult, contributing to the recent surge in insecurity. They believe that additional states would help address underdevelopment and social ills plaguing the region.

Hon. Soli praised the hospitality of the Sokoto State Government and commended Kebbi and Zamfara states for their cooperation. He urged attendees to share their ideas, criticisms, and aspirations, saying, “This is your moment. Do not hold back your ideas, criticisms, or aspirations. We are listening.”

The 2025 constitutional review process is the most comprehensive and people-centered in Nigeria’s history. As the process unfolds, Nigerians are hopeful that it will lead to a more just, equitable, and prosperous society.
