Nigeria has taken a significant step towards strengthening regional security and promoting economic integration with the launch of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC). The card, which replaces the old paper-based travel certificate, is built on advanced biometric and cryptographic technology compliant with ECOWAS and ICAO standards.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the ENBIC as “a powerful new beginning” for regional mobility and security cooperation, noting that it will ease pressure on passport demand and provide a simpler travel option for movement within West Africa. The card will also enhance border control, intelligence gathering, and reduce document fraud ¹.

The ENBIC is expected to have significant socioeconomic benefits, including boosting commerce, improving labour mobility, enhancing tourism, and deepening cooperation among West African nations. Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, said the card is a “foundational tool for a more secure, integrated, and prosperous region” ² ³.

The launch of the ENBIC is part of Nigeria’s commitment to regional cohesion and its leadership role in promoting peace and development across the ECOWAS bloc. President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, commended Nigeria for asserting leadership at a time of significant regional challenges ¹.

Would you like to know more about the benefits of the ENBIC or how it will be rolled out across West Africa?
