2027: Zamfara governor ties political future to Appeal Court ruling

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has said the outcome of the Court of Appeal judgment on the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party will determine his next political move.

Lawal who made the disclosure during a PDP stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Gusau on Tuesday, linked his next political move to Appeal Court decision regarding the legality of Kabiru Turaki’s leadership and the validity of the party’s Ibadan convention.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Public Enlightenment and Communication, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, the meeting drew party stakeholders from all 14 local government areas of the state.

Kaura explained that the gathering was convened in response to new guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general election.

“The guidelines indicate that by April or May, all party congresses must be concluded. There are litigations surrounding the PDP at the national level. If we remain without exploring options, we may face uncertainty and others may take the credit,” Kaura said.

He added that opinions within the party are divided. “If the judgment is not in our favour, some prefer the APC; others the ADC, while some advocate forming a new party,” he noted.

Governor Lawal stressed the need for clarity on the party’s leadership structure, maintaining that the Court of Appeal’s ruling would significantly influence his political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
