FCTA reactivates ‘Operation Sweep Abuja’

By Daniel Tyokua

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reactivated the joint security task force, “Operation Sweep Abuja,” to curb kidnapping, hoodlums, and other criminal activities in the nation’s capital.

Speaking at the relaunch on Friday, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi said the exercise is aimed at ridding the city of elements that could spark violence.

Operation Sweep Abuja was first launched in 2025 under the directive of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to strengthen security in the territory.

Sanusi said the operation would be carried out with renewed vigour to prevent miscreants from exploiting the rising political activities ahead of 2027. He urged the task force to work in synergy and pledged that officers’ welfare would be prioritized.

“We are relaunching Operation Sweep Abuja to ensure that the FCT is free from miscreants,” Sanusi said. “Officers must be ready. What is due to you, I will ensure you get it. This will strengthen synergy among the military, para-military, and other security agencies so that together we can confront these threats and bring about peace and security within and around the FCT.”

He stressed that the operation is not targeted at any group, religion, or culture, but solely at criminals and crime.

“There must be synergy among the agencies to work together and achieve meaningful results. There should be one agenda,” he added.

Corroborating, the Director FCT Security department, Adamu Gwary said the administration is committed to ensure that the taskforce operations achieved results.

“We are here to ensure maximum support, as enshrined in the FCT Minister’s directive. As you are aware, Operation Sweep is a comprehensive security activity across the FCT. The Honourable Minister is committed to supporting this joint operation to ensure the safety and security of the territory.

“”You are also aware that political activities ahead of the 2027 general election are beginning to pick up. The operation is therefore targeted at ensuring that all activities in the FCT go on smoothly.

“In a few weeks’ time just two weeks from now, we will mark the Sallah celebration. Special measures will be put in place to ensure that the celebration is covered effectively and peacefully.

“Beyond the political activities leading to 2027, the goal is to rid the FCT of all forms of crime and criminality.”
