President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, describing him as a distinguished soldier, diplomat and global peace advocate whose service brought honour to Nigeria and Africa.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Saturday, President Tinubu paid tribute to the late military officer, noting that his remarkable career was defined by professionalism, courage, selfless leadership and an unwavering commitment to peace and national development.

The President described Obiakor as an outstanding patriot who dedicated his life to serving humanity and advancing global peace initiatives, leaving behind an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Tinubu highlighted the late general’s historic achievement as the first African to serve as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations, a feat he said reflected Obiakor’s exceptional competence and earned him international acclaim.

According to the President, Obiakor’s leadership in several peacekeeping missions and his contributions to conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction across different regions of the world significantly enhanced the reputation of the Nigerian Armed Forces on the global stage.

“General Obiakor was a shining example of Nigerian excellence. He served our nation with distinction and carried the banner of Africa with dignity in the international arena. His contributions to global peace, security and diplomacy will remain a source of pride for generations of Nigerians,” Tinubu stated.

The President extended his condolences to the Obiakor family, the government and people of Anambra State, the Nigerian Armed Forces and members of the international peacekeeping community mourning the loss of the accomplished soldier and statesman.

He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the late general’s soul and asked God to grant comfort to all those affected by the loss.

The late Lt. Gen. Obiakor was widely respected for his contributions to international peacekeeping efforts and for his role in promoting stability and security in conflict-affected regions around the world.
