Osborn Umahi Emerges Ohaozara Chairman, Says He Will Forgo Official Pay

Osborn Nweze Umahi has emerged chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State after contesting the local council election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Mr Umahi, 28, had earlier won the APC chairmanship ticket after receiving all 55 votes cast by delegates during the party primary.
Following his emergence in the council election, Mr Umahi said he would not receive salaries or allowances during his tenure.
He said his administration would concentrate on development and improving living conditions within the local government.

Mr Umahi, an engineer and businessman, had during his campaign promised to introduce private-sector principles including efficiency, accountability and performance measurement into grassroots governance.

He is the son of David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works and a former governor of Ebonyi State.
His emergence is expected to attract significant attention because of his age and family background.

Beyond the symbolism surrounding his election, residents will be looking to his administration for improvements in infrastructure, economic opportunities and delivery of basic services across the council’s communities.
