Northern youths insist on 2031 power shift, urge Atiku to respect rotation

The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF), a coalition of youth organisations in Northern Nigeria, has called for adherence to the country’s power rotation arrangement, saying the region is prepared to wait until 2031 for another northern presidential term.

The coalition also urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to respect the rotational arrangement, arguing that individual political aspirations should not take precedence over what it described as the broader interests of the northern region.

In a statement signed by the National Chairman of the NYF, Sama Musa, the group disclosed that consultations with political leaders and other stakeholders across the North had commenced ahead of the 2031 general elections.

Musa said: “Fielding questions from journalists during the press briefing over the weekend in Abuja, the coalition cautioned Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over being disrespectful of the very office he is desperate to occupy.

“The group noted that serious consultations are already ongoing with key leaders of thought across the North ahead of 2031, emphasizing that the region remains a resilient, permanent pillar of the nation with deep political foresight.

“They maintained that the North is in no rush to prematurely interrupt power sharing and fully endorsed waiting until 2031 for the next northern presidential term. We have no problem whatsoever waiting until 2031. Power rotation in Nigeria is structured to rotate between the North and the South, not personal ambitions.”

The coalition further alleged that Atiku’s political activities could deepen divisions among Nigerians, maintaining that his individual political timetable should not determine the collective political direction of Northern Nigeria.

The group stressed that the North comprises diverse political interests and personalities, adding that no individual should be regarded as the sole representative of the region.

Musa added, “Presidency is rotated among regions, not individuals; Atiku does not represent the entirety of the North. The North has existed long before now and will continue to thrive, just as it did after great leaders like Sir Ahmadu Bello, Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Aminu Kano, Maitama Sule, and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Our region has never been bereft of quality human capital.

“The Northern Youth Frontiers concluded by reiterating that 2031 remains the designated turn for Northern Nigeria as a collective region, cautioning that no individual’s personal ambition will be permitted to undermine the unity and political balance of the nation.”
